Journalist Connie Bennett began research for
Sugar Shock!
more than a decade ago, while excessively chomping on hard
candies, red licorice, chocolate chips, and other inferior, fast-
acting carbs. She often relied on them just to get a “sugar high”
so she could meet her article deadlines.
Although she was not overweight, Connie was beleaguered by a
host of mystifying symptoms, including scary heart palpitations,
crippling fatigue, unsettling “brain fog,” ferocious PMS, irrational
mood swings, and sudden sobbing episodes. (Her behavior prompted her
puzzled boyfriend to dump her.)
Finally, in 1998, after seeing many doctors, Connie found a
nutrition-savvy M.D., who linked her ailments to her sugar habit and
hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). On doctor’s orders, Connie reluctantly
kicked the cherished sweets and processed “culprit carbs.” Amazingly,
every single one of her health woes completely disappeared. “Not to
sound trite, but I felt reborn,” she marvels.
Restored to good health and humor, Connie—a journalist with credits from
coast to coast and a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern
University—plunged into an investigation of hypoglycemia and the dangers
of sugar. The result? This provocative book, Sugar Shock! for
which she interviewed some 250 respected physicians, nutritionists,
researchers, and public health advocates; reviewed hundreds of recent
medical studies; and connected with thousands of “sugar addicts” around
the world.
These days, Connie—who laughingly dubs herself an “Ex Sugar Shrew!”— is
dedicated to helping “sugar sufferers” break free of their habit. She
encourages, nurtures, educates, and inspires them through her free,
online KickSugar support group; Just Ask Connie Teleseminars™; The
Stop Sugar Shock Countdown Diet™; and private coaching. In
addition, Connie offers sugar news, insights, musings and tips at
SugarShockBlog.com. Her tips and tactics help people quit or cut
back on quickie carbs and achieve “sugar liberation.”
