Press Room for Sugar Shock! (Berkley Books)

Sample Interview Questions for Stephen Sinatra, M.D., Medical Consultant for Sugar Shock! by Connie Bennett, C.H.H.C.*

1. When you first read Connie’s book, Sugar Shock!, what was your immediate reaction? Has there ever been a book such as this? Why did you agree to come on board as the book’s medical consultant?

2. I understand that your mom’s experiences with diabetes and your own helplessness in the face of her illness is what led you to become a doctor. Can you tell us what doctors told your mom to eat? How was this advice wrong and why?

3. The press materials tell us that some 20 years ago, you were recommending to your heart disease patients that they eat lots of carbs, but you found that they were gaining weight and developing insulin resistance. How did you learn the error of your ways?

4. Do you really believe that eating sugar could give you heart disease much faster than consuming high-cholesterol foods? What do you mean by this?

5. Tell us what it’s like to be a doctor and receive all those drug freebies from the pharmaceutical companies. Do they really come armed with convincing “research”—but not the right kind?

6. Why are most mainstream doctors so short on nutrition knowledge and so behind on the dangers of sugar and refined carbs?

7. It’s great that you actually went and received additional nutrition education unlike most doctors. Can you explain in simple terms how too much sugar can age you more quickly? Is this theory accepted by the mainstream medical profession? Why or why not?

8. Do most Americans on cholesterol-lowering medications such as statins really need to take these drugs?

9. Let’s get right down to an important question that many are asking. The American Diabetes Association says that it’s OK to have sugar in moderation, but many of us have seen people with diabetes mindlessly eating sweets and simple carbs with no concern at all about what it does to their blood sugar levels. If you’re one of America’s nearly 21 million diabetics, can you have sugar or processed carbohydrates?

10. Can you please explain your 80-20 theory? Do you really believe that eating quality carbs 80 to 90 percent of the time and allowing yourself inferior carbs the other 10 to 20 percent of the time works? Does Connie agree with you?

*If desired, Dr. Stephen Sinatra is available to appear with Connie for TV or radio shows. In addition, he can be interviewed for national publications and web outlets
